Huawei’s second-generation tri-fold smartphone has made its first official public appearance, giving an early look at the design direction for the upcoming Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design ahead of its confirmed September 7 launch date.

A Second-Generation Tri-Fold

The Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design represents Huawei’s second attempt at the tri-fold form factor, following the original Mate XT Ultimate Design, which launched back in 2024 as the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. Building on that first-generation device, this follow-up appears to bring several refinements to both the design and functionality of Huawei’s tri-fold lineup.

A Dynamic Island-Style Cutout on the Cover Display

One of the more notable design details from this first look is the inclusion of a Dynamic Island-style cutout on the phone’s outer cover display. This kind of pill-shaped camera cutout, most closely associated with Apple’s iPhone lineup, would mark a fairly significant design shift for Huawei if implemented consistently across the cover screen, suggesting the company may be adopting a similar approach to housing front-facing camera and sensor components.

A Notably Thin Profile

Based on this first look, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design appears remarkably thin, a genuinely impressive engineering feat for a tri-fold device given the additional hinge mechanisms and folding layers required compared to a standard smartphone or even a traditional book-style foldable.

The device’s metal frame is clearly visible, along with visible antenna lines integrated into the design and a hinge mechanism that appears refined compared to what’s typically expected from tri-fold engineering at this early stage of the category’s development. Achieving a thin profile while still accommodating a tri-fold hinge system remains one of the most difficult engineering challenges in the foldable phone space, making this detail particularly noteworthy.

A Larger Camera Module

On the rear, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design features a notably large camera module, suggesting Huawei is continuing to prioritize camera hardware as a core differentiator for this device, consistent with the company’s broader positioning around imaging technology across its recent flagship releases.

What to Expect at the September 7 Launch

With this first official look now public and the launch date confirmed for September 7, more complete details, including full specifications, pricing, and camera hardware breakdowns, should be revealed as Huawei moves closer to the official unveiling. Given how significant a first-generation product the original Mate XT Ultimate Design was for the tri-fold category, this second-generation follow-up will likely draw considerable attention from both foldable phone enthusiasts and the broader smartphone industry watching how Huawei refines the format.

As with any early first-look reveal, full technical specifications remain unconfirmed at this stage, and additional details are expected to surface in the lead-up to the September 7 launch event.
