Samsung has officially launched two wide foldable phones together: a standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra variant. While the standard model appears positioned to compete with Huawei’s own wide-foldable devices, the Ultra variant looks specifically aimed at Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone, widely expected to launch as the “iPhone Ultra.”
Design and Dimensions
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is slightly longer than the standard Wide Edition and comes in four color options: Green Shadow, Violet Shadow, Cream, and Graphite.
In terms of dimensions, the device measures 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.9mm when folded, and 82.2 x 123.9 x 9.8mm when unfolded. Compared to the standard Wide Edition, the Ultra model features a noticeably slimmer body overall.
On the back, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features a rail-style camera bar housing three button-shaped camera lenses alongside an LED flash. The overall design looks more compact and easier to hold in hand compared to the standard variant, likely a deliberate choice given how bulky foldable phones can otherwise feel during everyday use.
A Genuine Upgrade Over the Galaxy Z Fold 7
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra appears to represent a meaningful step up from the previous Galaxy Z Fold 7. It features an 8-inch main display using LTPO Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, paired with Samsung’s Flex Titanium structural technology. The display supports peak brightness of up to 3,600 nits and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate.
The cover display, meanwhile, measures 6.5 inches with peak brightness reaching 2,600 nits, and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for added durability against everyday scratches and drops.
Powering the device is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM, and storage options going up to a generous 1TB for users who need substantial on-device space.
Camera System
On the camera front, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra continues to use a 200-megapixel primary sensor, consistent with its predecessor. This time, however, it’s paired with a 50-megapixel ultrawide-angle camera and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor offering 3x optical zoom, giving the device a more well-rounded camera system across wide, standard, and zoomed shooting scenarios compared to the previous generation.
Battery and Charging
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra with a 5,000mAh battery, a solid capacity for a foldable device given the internal space constraints created by the folding hinge mechanism. The battery supports 45W wired charging, allowing for reasonably quick top-ups despite the device’s larger overall battery size.
Positioning Against Apple’s Foldable iPhone
Samsung appears to have significantly optimized both chipset performance and internal specifications with this new Ultra variant, suggesting the company is treating this release as a direct answer to Apple’s rumored entry into the foldable phone category. With Apple’s own foldable iPhone still expected to launch later this year, it remains to be seen how well the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra holds up as a genuine rival once Apple’s device becomes available for direct comparison.
For now, Samsung’s decision to launch a dedicated Ultra-tier foldable alongside its standard Fold 8 model signals the company’s intent to maintain a strong competitive position at the premium end of the foldable market, right as Apple prepares to enter the space for the first time.
