Google’s latest Android 17 update brings a significantly improved wireless data migration experience for users switching over from an iPhone, aiming to remove some of the biggest friction points that have historically made moving between mobile platforms a hassle.

What Android 17 Now Transfers From iPhone

According to Google, the upgraded switching tool now supports transferring Google Accounts, saved passwords, Wi-Fi network credentials, and eSIMs directly from an iPhone to a new Android device. This builds on top of the data types already supported by the previous version of the switching tool, which included photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendar entries.

It’s worth noting that this expanded transfer functionality specifically requires the iPhone to be running iOS 26.3 or later, so users on older iOS versions may need to update their iPhone before initiating a full transfer.

Why This Update Exists: The EU’s Digital Markets Act

This improvement isn’t purely a voluntary feature addition. Both Apple and Google were required to implement app-free iPhone-to-Android and Android-to-iPhone transfer tools in order to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a regulation specifically designed to prevent major tech platforms from making it unnecessarily difficult for users to switch between competing ecosystems.

As a result of this requirement, both companies now offer simple, built-in transfer options directly within the device setup process when configuring a new Android phone or iPhone. Previously, moving data between platforms typically required downloading and using a separate dedicated app, an extra step that likely deterred some users from switching platforms altogether.

A Broader Push Toward Data Portability

The Digital Markets Act specifically mandates that platform providers support data portability, ensuring users aren’t effectively locked into one operating system simply because switching would mean losing access to their data, contacts, or accumulated app history. This same regulation previously forced Apple and Google to implement a simplified eSIM transfer process as well, making it easier for users to move their cellular plan over to a new device without needing to visit a carrier store or manually reconfigure their SIM setup.

What This Means for Users Considering a Switch

For anyone who’s held off on switching from iPhone to Android, or vice versa, due to concerns about losing data or dealing with a complicated manual transfer process, these built-in tools substantially lower that barrier. With Android 17 now supporting a broader range of data types, including sensitive information like saved passwords and Wi-Fi credentials, switching platforms should feel considerably less disruptive than it has in previous years.

As regulatory pressure from the EU’s Digital Markets Act continues to shape how major tech companies design their platforms, it’s likely that both Apple and Google will continue refining these cross-platform switching tools further in future software updates.
