After years of sticking with the same front-facing camera, Samsung may finally be ready to give its top-tier Galaxy phones a selfie camera upgrade. A new leak suggests the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will move to a 16MP front sensor, replacing the 12MP selfie camera Samsung has used since the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The core upgrade is straightforward: a jump from 12MP to 16MP on the front camera. On paper, that bump should translate into sharper detail, better low-light performance, and improved video quality for selfies and video calls — areas where Samsung’s Ultra-series phones have lagged behind rivals despite leading in almost every other camera category.
It’s a change that’s arguably overdue. The 12MP front sensor has carried through four generations of Ultra flagships — the S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, S25 Ultra, and S26 Ultra — without a significant revision, even as rear camera systems saw major overhauls each year.

Alongside the megapixel bump, there’s an additional — and currently unconfirmed — rumor floating around: a square-shaped selfie sensor designed to better capture both portrait and landscape orientations without cropping. If accurate, this would be a notable departure from the standard rectangular front camera sensors used across the industry, potentially giving users more flexible framing for selfies and video without needing to rotate the phone.
Given this detail isn’t corroborated elsewhere yet, it’s worth treating as speculative until more sources back it up.
This leak lines up with a separate, more widely reported rumor: Samsung is expected to bring its hardware-based Privacy Display technology — first introduced on the Galaxy S26 Ultra — to the entire Galaxy S27 lineup, including the base model, Plus, Pro, and Ultra. Between the camera and display upgrades, Samsung appears to be positioning the S27 series as a broader, more evenly-distributed upgrade across its flagship tiers rather than reserving the best features for the Ultra alone.
