Apple could be facing a memory chip supply shortage ahead of the iPhone 18 series launch, according to tipster Saurav on X, citing multiple reports pointing to a potential DRAM bottleneck affecting the company’s upcoming flagship lineup.

The A20 Pro Chip Is Reportedly Ready, But Packaging Is Delayed

According to these reports, Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip is said to be ready for production. However, the final chip packaging process is reportedly being held up due to a shortage of available DRAM memory, meaning the chip itself isn’t the bottleneck, but rather the memory component needed to complete the overall chip package.

Multiple Memory Suppliers, But Still a Shortage

Apple is reportedly sourcing DRAM from three major suppliers: Micron, SK hynix, and Samsung. Despite working with multiple established memory manufacturers simultaneously, Apple is said to be exploring additional suppliers as well, suggesting the current supply from its existing partners isn’t sufficient to meet Apple’s production needs heading into launch.

This kind of memory shortage isn’t unique to Apple. The broader semiconductor industry has faced significant memory pricing and supply pressure recently, largely driven by surging demand from AI infrastructure, which has redirected substantial manufacturing capacity away from consumer electronics components like smartphone memory chips.

Potential Impact on iPhone 18 Availability

If this shortage isn’t resolved before launch, reports suggest it could lead to limited availability of the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone Ultra right from launch day. Given that all three of these devices represent Apple’s premium, higher-margin product lines for this generation, a supply constraint affecting these specific models could be particularly impactful for both Apple’s sales figures and consumer access to the devices.

Apple Reportedly Confident About Initial Demand

Despite these supply concerns, reports indicate Apple remains confident about meeting initial demand at launch. However, the situation could shift somewhat differently once initial launch-day stock sells through. According to these reports, online delivery times and retail stock availability could become increasingly limited shortly after launch if the underlying DRAM supply situation doesn’t improve in the coming weeks.

This pattern, strong initial launch-day availability followed by tightening supply afterward, wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented for a major iPhone launch, though a shortage specifically tied to memory chip supply would represent a somewhat different challenge than the assembly or logistics-related constraints Apple has occasionally faced in past launches.

What This Means for iPhone 18 Buyers

For anyone planning to purchase the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, or the rumored foldable iPhone Ultra at launch, these reports suggest it may be worth securing a pre-order or purchasing relatively early if the device is available, rather than waiting, given the possibility of tightening stock levels in the weeks following the initial launch window.

As always, these details remain based on industry reporting rather than official confirmation from Apple. The company hasn’t commented publicly on any supply chain challenges tied to the iPhone 18 series, and it remains to be seen whether this reported DRAM shortage will meaningfully affect the device’s actual launch-day and post-launch availability once Apple’s official announcement arrives.
