That caution may finally be easing. New information suggests the upcoming Galaxy S27 Ultra could be the phone that breaks the pattern.

The reported candidates include cells at 5,600mAh and 5,800mAh, with a more conservative 5,200mAh option also said to be under consideration. One detail stands out: all of the batteries being tested reportedly use conventional lithium-ion chemistry, not the silicon-carbon battery technology that some competitors have started adopting to pack more capacity into a smaller physical footprint. That choice says something about Samsung’s likely strategy here — rather than betting on newer, less proven materials, the company appears to be leaning on battery chemistry it already trusts at scale. Why the Timing Makes Sense
Samsung’s rivals haven’t stood still on this front. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max already ships with a larger battery than the current Galaxy S Ultra, and recent 3C regulatory filings indicate the iPhone 18 Pro Max will push capacity even higher. On the Android side, Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus have been shipping flagship phones with batteries well past 6,000mAh, and in some cases beyond 7,000mAh, for their domestic markets.
Against that backdrop, a jump to something above 5,500mAh wouldn’t just be a nice-to-have for Samsung — it would help the Ultra line stay competitive on one of the specs that matters most to everyday users: how long the phone lasts between charges.
Still Early, But Worth Watching
It’s worth stressing that none of this is finalized. The Galaxy S27 series is still months from any official announcement, and battery testing at this stage doesn’t guarantee what ships in the retail version. Samsung has been known to adjust specs late in development based on cost, supply, or performance testing.
That said, if a larger battery does make it to launch, it would likely arrive alongside other rumored upgrades, including a wider under-display camera setup and a redesigned camera housing.
