Apple iPhone 5 — The iPhone That Changed Everything Again
The Apple iPhone 5 is the 6th generation iPhone, succeeding the iPhone 4S and formally unveiled on September 12, 2012, before being released on September 21, 2012. It was the first iPhone to be completely developed under the guidance of Tim Cook, and it brought some of the most significant design changes Apple had introduced to the iPhone line up to that point.
The iPhone 5 was announced as the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever at the time of its release, completely redesigned to feature a stunning 4-inch Retina display, an Apple-designed A6 chip for blazing fast performance, and ultrafast wireless technology. The shift to an aluminum body made it feel premium and noticeably lighter in the hand compared to its predecessor.
The iPhone 5 features a 4.0-inch display, the Apple A6 chipset, an 8MP primary camera, a 1.2MP front camera, a 1440mAh battery, and storage options of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. It also introduced the Lightning connector for the first time, replacing the older 30-pin dock connector and setting the standard Apple would use for years to come.
The iPhone 5 launched with iOS 6, featuring the all-new Maps app with turn-by-turn navigation, Facebook integration, Passbook, and expanded Siri features and languages. It was available in two color finishes — White & Silver and Black & Slate — and sold over five million units in its opening weekend alone.
Pricing started at $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model, and $399 for the 64GB model on contract in the US. Though now a vintage device, the iPhone 5 remains a landmark product in Apple’s history and a pivotal moment in the evolution of the modern smartphone.
