Sony has expanded its Cybershot compact camera lineup with the launch of the RX10 V, unveiled globally on Thursday. As the fifth generation of the RX10 series, the new camera brings a notable jump in autofocus intelligence and video capability, while retaining the fixed superzoom lens design that has made the lineup popular among travel and wildlife photographers.

The headline feature is the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 24-600mm lens, offering 25x optical zoom with a variable aperture ranging from f2.4 to f4.0. This is paired with a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and powered by Sony’s proprietary BIONZ XR image processor, the same processing engine used across several of the company’s higher-end camera systems. Perhaps most notably, Sony has added a dedicated AI processing unit aimed at improving autofocus tracking, along with support for 4K video recording at up to 120fps.

Sony RX10 V Price and Availability

Sony has priced the RX10 V at EUR 2,499 (roughly Rs. 2.72 lakh) in the EU, and around GBP 2,199 (roughly Rs. 2.81 lakh) in the UK. Pre-orders for the camera opened the same day as the announcement. As of now, Sony hasn’t confirmed pricing or availability details for the Indian market, so buyers in India will need to wait for a separate regional announcement.

Sensor, Lens, and Autofocus Performance

At the core of the RX10 V is a 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor with approximately 20.1 effective megapixels, working alongside the BIONZ XR processing engine to handle image data. The fixed Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens covers a versatile 24-600mm equivalent focal range, giving photographers everything from wide-angle shots to significant telephoto reach without needing to swap lenses. Sony also claims strong macro capability, with focusing distances as close as 3cm at the wide end and 72cm at the telephoto end.

The camera’s built-in AI processing unit powers what Sony calls Real-time Recognition autofocus, a system designed to automatically identify and track a wide range of subjects, including humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and even aeroplanes. This is paired with an Auto recognition mode and human pose estimation technology, both aimed at improving how reliably the camera locks onto and follows a moving subject, a feature that’s typically been reserved for Sony’s higher-end mirrorless cameras rather than compact superzoom models.

In terms of raw autofocus performance, the RX10 V offers up to 575 phase-detection autofocus points and is capable of shooting blackout-free continuous bursts at up to 30fps, while maintaining continuous autofocus and auto-exposure tracking throughout the burst, a useful feature for capturing fast-moving action like sports or wildlife.

Video Capabilities

For video-focused users, the Sony RX10 V supports 4K recording at up to 120fps, enabling slow-motion playback at up to 5x speed. The camera also includes several features aimed at more advanced video work, including 10-bit 4:2:2 recording for greater color depth and post-production flexibility, Sony’s S-Cinetone color profile, S-Log3 for extended dynamic range grading, and Active Mode image stabilization for smoother handheld footage.

Additional video-oriented features include support for user-imported LUTs (Look-Up Tables) for custom color grading, Auto Framing for dynamically adjusting composition, a time-lapse mode, and a Shot Mark feature that allows users to extract still images from video footage. On the audio side, the RX10 V uses Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe, allowing compatibility with a range of external digital microphones for improved audio capture.

Display and Viewfinder

Rounding out the RX10 V’s feature set, the camera includes a 0.5-inch Quad-VGA OLED electronic viewfinder with 3.68 million dots of resolution and 0.78x magnification, offering a sharp, detailed view for composing shots. It’s paired with a 3.0-inch tilting LCD touchscreen carrying 1.62 million dots, giving photographers flexibility to shoot from various angles while still having full touch control over settings and focus points.

Who Is the RX10 V For?

With its combination of a versatile 25x zoom lens, advanced AI-driven autofocus, and strong 4K video specifications, the RX10 V continues to target photographers and content creators who want a single, do-it-all camera without the hassle of carrying multiple lenses. The premium pricing reflects that positioning, placing it well above typical point-and-shoot compacts and closer to enthusiast-level camera systems. More details, including India availability, are expected to follow in the coming weeks.
