PlayStation 5 emulation on PC has seen a genuine surge of activity in recent weeks, with multiple independent projects making faster progress than many in the emulation community expected. While full, playable PS5 gaming on a Windows PC still isn’t a reality, several emulators have reached notable technical milestones that suggest the scene is moving quicker than previous console emulation efforts did.
Multiple Projects Racing Toward the Same Goal
Several separate PS5 emulator projects have been actively developing in parallel, each taking a slightly different technical approach. KytyPS5, a C++ emulator for Windows, was revived in 2026 from an earlier, abandoned research project first started in 2021. Its source code was published publicly in mid-July, and the emulator has already managed to boot several commercial titles as far as their main menus.
According to reporting from Tom’s Hardware, KytyPS5 has successfully booted the PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto V far enough to display loading screens and main menu art, and even allowed navigation through in-game display settings. Separately, the emulator was able to push Quake II Remastered into its actual 3D rendering stage, a meaningful technical step beyond simply reaching a menu screen.
Another project, SharpEmu, written from scratch in C#, has also made headlines. According to Notebookcheck, SharpEmu successfully ran Dreaming Sarah, a 2D puzzle platformer, and managed to get Bloodborne, a PlayStation 5 exclusive, as far as its loading screen.
A third project, RPCSX, is built on code derived from RPCS3, the well-established PlayStation 3 emulator, and represents the oldest of the current PS5 emulation efforts, with its repository dating back to 2023.
Going Open Source
In a significant development for the broader project, both SharpEmu and KytyPS5 opened their source code to outside contributors within a day of each other in mid-July. SharpEmu’s code, issue tracker, and contribution process are now public under the GPL-2.0 license, and the project has already received code contributions from outside developers. KytyPS5’s initial public commit included over 400 files and roughly 206,000 lines of code, covering core components like guest memory handling, shader recompilation, and its Vulkan-based rendering system.
Opening these projects to community contributions could meaningfully accelerate development, following a similar pattern to how other emulation projects have grown once a wider pool of developers gets involved.
Why This Is Happening Faster Than Expected
Part of what makes this current wave of PS5 emulation notable is simply how quickly it’s progressing compared to past console emulation efforts. For comparison, ShadPS4, an emulator for Sony’s previous-generation PS4 console, took a considerably longer path to reach triple-digit playable game counts. The current PS5 projects are attempting to reach meaningful game-boot progress within days of going public, rather than the years-long timelines seen with earlier PlayStation emulation efforts.
Some of this renewed momentum in the community also appears connected to Sony’s recent moves regarding physical PS5 game media, which has reportedly frustrated parts of the gaming community and seemingly increased motivation among developers and enthusiasts working on emulation.
Don’t Expect Playable Games Just Yet
Despite the rapid pace of development, it’s important to set realistic expectations here. As of now, no PS5 emulator can deliver sustained, playable gameplay across a meaningful library of titles. The furthest progress made so far involves reaching main menus, settings screens, or splash screens, not actual, consistent in-game performance. More demanding titles have reportedly gotten stuck in looping cinematic sequences before reaching any real gameplay.
Whether this pace of progress holds up once developers move past menu screens and into fully functional rendering pipelines remains an open question that the rest of the year should help answer.
A Word of Caution on Fake “Emulator” Sites
As is common whenever an emulation project generates significant buzz, opportunistic and fake websites have already started appearing, positioning themselves as “official” download or installation sources for these emulators. Readers interested in following this space should be cautious about downloading anything claiming to be a fully working, ready-to-use PS5 emulator, since no legitimate project has reached that stage yet. Any site claiming otherwise should be treated with significant skepticism.
What to Expect Going Forward
Given the technical complexity involved, particularly around the PS5’s custom GPU architecture and hardware components, genuinely playable PS5 emulation likely remains some time away. That said, the current pace of development, combined with these projects now being open to community contributions, suggests meaningful progress could continue at a faster rate than many previous console emulation efforts.
