Samsung SGH-2100 (1999) — A Nostalgic Look Back at an Early Samsung Classic

The Samsung SGH-2100 was a discontinued flip-style feature phone launched in January 1999, taking us back to the early days of mobile phones when basic communication — not apps or cameras — was all that mattered. Weighing a featherlight 111g with a slim battery and just 24mm thick, the SGH-2100 was remarkably compact for its era.

It featured a small monochrome graphic display with a resolution of 115 x 60 pixels across 4 lines, paired with simple navigation through physical buttons and softkeys. The phone supported a phonebook with 100 entries, call records for 10 dialed, received, and missed calls, 5 message templates, 20 voice dial numbers, and a 140-second voice memo recorder.

As expected for a phone of its time, the SGH-2100 had no camera, no Bluetooth, no GPS, no radio, and no WLAN connectivity — features that simply didn’t exist in mainstream mobile phones yet. It ran on GSM network technology and used a removable Li-Ion battery offering up to 55 hours of standby time and 2 hours of talk time, or alternatively up to 85 hours standby and 3.5 hours talk time depending on the battery variant.

Although the Samsung SGH-2100 has long been discontinued, it remains cherished by collectors and retro tech enthusiasts for its nostalgic simplicity and reliable, no-frills design. It stands today as a charming reminder of just how far mobile technology has come.
