Samsung SGH-2200 (1999) — A Nostalgic Look Back at Early Mobile Phone History
The Samsung SGH-2200 was introduced and discontinued in January 1999, making it one of the earliest mobile phones in Samsung’s lineup. It featured a classic flip form factor and ran on 2G GSM 900/1800 networks, the standard connectivity of its era.
The phone weighed just 111 grams with its battery installed and measured 98 x 44 x 22mm, making it slim and pocket-friendly by late-1990s standards. It featured a basic monochrome graphical display with a resolution of 115 x 60 pixels across 4 lines, paired with support for SMS messaging, a phonebook, and predictive text input — an advanced feature for its time.
As expected for a late-90s feature phone, the SGH-2200 lacked a camera, internal storage, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and a 3.5mm headphone jack — features that simply didn’t exist in mainstream mobile phones yet. It offered a talk time of around 2 hours powered by a removable Li-Ion battery, and it was available in 3 different colors.
While it may seem extremely basic by today’s standards, the Samsung SGH-2200 represents an important piece of mobile phone history — a reminder of just how far smartphone technology has come in less than three decades.
