If you have been using your personal Facebook profile to promote your business, brand, or public figure presence, you are not alone — but you are breaking Facebook’s terms of service, and you could lose your account permanently as a result.

According to Facebook, Pages are designed for businesses, public figures, and organisations in order to help them connect with customers and reach their business goals. It is against Facebook’s terms to use a personal account to represent a business.

The good news is that Facebook provides an official migration tool that lets you convert your personal profile into a Facebook Page — and the process carries over your friends as Page followers so you do not have to start from scratch.

In this complete guide, we cover everything you need to know about converting a Facebook profile to a Page in 2026 — why you should do it, what gets transferred and what does not, step-by-step instructions for desktop and mobile, what happens after the conversion, and answers to every common question about the process.

Why Convert Your Facebook Profile to a Page?

There are several compelling reasons to make the switch — beyond simply complying with Facebook’s rules:

1. It Is Required by Facebook’s Terms of Service

It is breaking the Facebook terms of service to use a profile to represent anything other than yourself — for example, your business or nonprofit. If you use a personal profile to represent a business and do not convert it to a Facebook Page, you could permanently lose access to your account.

This is not a theoretical risk. Facebook has periodically removed profiles that are clearly being used for business purposes, with no warning and no appeal. Converting now protects everything you have built.

2. Your Friends Become Page Followers

When you convert, all of your friends and followers will be converted to people who like your Page. This way you do not need to start from scratch — you do not have to create a new Facebook Page for your business and build followers from zero.

This is arguably the biggest advantage of the migration tool over simply creating a new Page. Your existing audience moves with you.

3. No Friend Limit

A personal Facebook profile is capped at 5,000 friends. A Facebook Page has no limit on the number of people who can follow or like it. If you are growing a brand or business, a Page removes this ceiling entirely.

4. Access to Page Insights and Analytics

With a Facebook Page, you have access to Facebook Insights, where you can see important metrics like which posts people engage with, and visitor demographics like age and location. Personal profiles offer no equivalent analytics tools.

5. Ability to Run Facebook Ads

Facebook advertising is only available through Pages — not personal profiles. Converting gives you access to Facebook’s entire advertising platform, including boosted posts, targeted ad campaigns, and retargeting.

6. Multiple Admin Access

Pages let you give other people — colleagues — access to your Page so they can also post and make edits. On a personal profile, no one else can manage your account without having your personal login credentials.

7. Better Organic Reach for Business Content

Pages that are liked are promoted more than pages or profiles that are followed. Facebook’s algorithm treats Page content differently from profile content, and a proper Page signals to the platform that you are creating business or public interest content.

What Gets Transferred When You Convert?

Before starting the conversion, understand exactly what carries over and what does not.

What DOES Transfer

  • Profile name — your current profile name becomes the Page name
  • Profile picture — transferred to the Page profile picture
  • Cover photo — transferred to the Page cover photo
  • Friends and followers — converted to Page followers and likes
  • Username/vanity URL — if you had a custom @username, it transfers to the Page

What Does NOT Transfer

  • Posts and status updates — your personal timeline posts do not move to the Page
  • Personal information — birthday, relationship status, personal bio, education, and work history do not carry over
  • Photos and albums — your personal photo library does not transfer (though you can manually download and re-upload key images)
  • Messages and conversations — your Facebook Messenger history remains with your personal account
  • Groups membership — your group memberships remain with your personal account
  • Events — personal events do not transfer to the Page

Important: Before converting, download a copy of your Facebook data to preserve your posts, photos, and personal information. See Step 1 below for how to do this.

Before You Convert: Important Preparation Steps

Step A: Download Your Facebook Data

To download your Facebook data, go to Settings, and below the General option on the left-hand panel select Your Facebook Information. Then select the Download your information option from the right side.

This gives you a complete archive of your posts, photos, messages, and personal information — all the content that will not transfer to the new Page.

Full steps:

  1. Go to facebook.com → click the Menu (three lines) → tap Settings and Privacy → Settings
  2. Click Your Facebook Information in the left sidebar
  3. Click Download Your Information
  4. Select the data types you want to save — at minimum, select Posts, Photos and Videos, and Personal Information
  5. Choose your preferred Format (HTML is easier to read; JSON is more complete)
  6. Choose your Date Range and Media Quality
  7. Click Create File — Facebook will prepare the download and notify you when it is ready (this may take minutes to hours depending on how much data you have)
  8. Download and save the file to your computer before proceeding

Step B: Save Important Contact Information

Since your personal messages and friend contact details will not transfer, note down any important contact information from your friends list or Messenger before converting.

Step C: Inform Your Audience

Consider posting a brief announcement letting your friends know that your profile is converting to a Page and that they will automatically become followers. This manages expectations and prevents confusion when the change happens.

Step D: Choose Your Page Category

Think about which Facebook Page category best describes your business or brand. You will need to select this during the conversion process. Common categories include:

  • Local Business or Place
  • Company, Organisation, or Institution
  • Brand or Product
  • Artist, Band, or Public Figure
  • Entertainment
  • Cause or Community

How to Convert a Facebook Profile to a Page on Desktop (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Open your browser and go to facebook.com. Sign in to the personal profile you want to convert.

Step 2: Click the Menu icon (three horizontal lines or the grid icon) in the top right corner of Facebook.

Step 3: Go to Settings and Privacy → Settings.

Step 4: In the left sidebar, click Your Facebook Information.

Step 5: Look for the option labelled Convert Your Profile to a Page or navigate directly to: facebook.com/pages/create/migrate

This is Facebook’s official Profile to Page Migration tool.

Step 6: The migration page will open. Click Get Started.

Step 7: Choose the Page category that best represents your business or brand. Select from the available categories and subcategories. Click Next.

Step 8: Review the information that will be transferred — your name, profile picture, and cover photo. Confirm they are appropriate for a public business Page. Click Next.

Step 9: Review which of your friends will become Page followers. All current friends and followers will be migrated as Page likes/follows. Click Next.

Step 10: Review the Publish Page when done setting. Turn this setting off if you do not want your Page to publish automatically once converted. Keeping it off lets you finish setting up your Page before it goes public. Click Convert.

Step 11: Facebook will process the conversion. This may take a few minutes. Once complete, your personal profile will have been converted into a Facebook Page.

Step 12: You will be redirected to your new Page. From here, complete the Page setup — add a description, contact details, website URL, business hours, and any other relevant information that was not carried over from your profile.

How to Convert a Facebook Profile to a Page on Mobile (Android and iPhone)

The mobile process follows the same path but through the Facebook app interface.

Step 1: Open the Facebook app on your Android or iPhone. Make sure you are logged into the profile you want to convert.

Step 2: Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom right corner on iPhone, or the top right corner on Android.

Step 3: Scroll down and tap Settings and Privacy → Settings.

Step 4: Scroll down to find Your Facebook Information and tap it.

Step 5: Look for Convert Your Profile to a Page and tap it. Alternatively, open your mobile browser and go to facebook.com/pages/create/migrate while logged into the correct account.

Step 6: Tap Get Started and follow the on-screen prompts — choose your Page category, review what transfers, and confirm the migration settings.

Step 7: Tap Convert to complete the process.

Step 8: Once converted, your new Page will open in the Facebook app. Complete your Page setup by adding a description, contact information, and any other details your audience needs.

What Happens After the Conversion?

Understanding what changes after conversion helps you manage the transition smoothly.

Your Personal Profile Is Gone

Once you convert, your personal profile no longer exists as a profile. The account is now a Page. You will need a separate personal Facebook account to manage the Page — Facebook requires a personal account to act as the Page administrator.

If you do not already have a separate personal account: After the conversion, Facebook may prompt you to create a new personal account to manage the Page. This personal account is kept private from your Page audience — only you know it exists as the admin account.

Your Friends Become Page Followers

All 5,000 (or however many) friends from your profile are converted to Page followers who have “liked” your Page. They will see your Page posts in their feeds based on Facebook’s normal algorithm for Page content.

Your Username/URL May Change

If your personal profile had a custom @username, it will transfer to the Page. If not, Facebook will assign a default Page URL which you can customise through Page settings.

Your Profile Picture and Cover Photo Transfer

Facebook will transfer your profile picture and your cover photo to the Page. You will need to update the Page with images that are appropriate for your business. Take this opportunity to replace personal photos with professional brand imagery.

Your Personal Posts Do Not Appear on the Page

The Page starts with a clean timeline — your personal posts, photos, and updates are not visible. This is actually an advantage for businesses, as it gives you a clean professional starting point.

Setting Up Your New Facebook Page After Conversion

Once the conversion is complete, take these steps to make your Page professional and complete:

1. Update Your Page Profile Picture and Cover Photo

Replace any personal photos with professional brand imagery — your business logo, product photo, or a professional headshot if you are a public figure or personal brand.

2. Write a Compelling Page Description

Your Page description is the first thing visitors read. Write a clear, concise summary of what your business or brand offers — include relevant keywords to help your Page appear in Facebook and Google searches.

3. Add Contact Information

Complete your Page’s contact details:

  • Website URL
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Physical address (if applicable)
  • Business hours

4. Add a Call to Action Button

Facebook Pages include a prominent call-to-action (CTA) button that appears on your Page header. Choose the button that best suits your goal — Contact Us, Learn More, Shop Now, Book Now, or Send Message.

5. Create Your First Page Post

Publish a welcome post introducing your Page to your new audience. Let your followers know about the conversion, what kind of content they can expect, and how to get in touch. Pin this post to the top of your Page so it is the first thing new visitors see.

6. Invite Friends to Like Your Page

Your converted friends are now Page followers, but you can also invite additional people to like your Page. Use the Invite Friends option from your Page dashboard to send invitations to any Facebook friends who have not yet followed your Page.

Alternative: Professional Mode (If You Want to Keep a Personal Profile)

If you want to keep your personal profile but also reach a wider public audience, Facebook offers Professional Mode as an alternative to full conversion.

Professional Mode transforms your personal profile into a more public-facing format — similar to how influencers use their profiles on Facebook — without completely converting it to a Page. In Professional Mode:

  • Anyone can follow your public posts (not just friends)
  • You get access to basic creator analytics
  • You retain your personal profile features (friends, Messenger, etc.)
  • You do not get full Page Insights or advertising tools

Professional Mode is suitable for creators and individuals who want broader reach while keeping a personal profile. For businesses, organisations, and serious brands, a full Page conversion remains the recommended approach.

Common Questions and Troubleshooting

The migration tool is not showing in my Settings

Facebook’s Profile to Page migration tool has been inconsistently available across different regions and account types. If you cannot find it in Settings → Your Facebook Information, try navigating directly to facebook.com/pages/create/migrate while logged into your account. If the tool is unavailable for your account, contact Facebook Support for assistance.

Can I reverse the conversion?

No. Once you convert a profile to a Page, the process is not reversible through any self-service tool. Facebook does not currently offer a way to convert a Page back into a personal profile. Make sure you are certain before proceeding, and complete all the preparation steps first.

What happens to my Facebook Groups after conversion?

Your group memberships remain with your personal account, not the Page. If you managed groups as a personal profile, you will need to manage them through the personal account you use as the Page administrator after conversion.

Will my followers know about the conversion?

They will see that the profile they were friends with is now a Page they follow. Facebook may show a notification to your audience, but there is no formal announcement sent on your behalf. This is why posting an advance notice to your profile before converting is recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it against Facebook’s rules to use a personal profile for business?

Yes. According to Facebook, it is against their terms to use a personal account to represent a business. Using a profile for business purposes risks having your account permanently disabled without warning.

Will I lose my friends when I convert my profile to a Page?

No. All of your friends and followers will be converted to people who like your Page. You do not lose your audience— they become Page followers automatically.

Can I still use Facebook personally after converting?

Yes — but you will need a separate personal Facebook profile to do so. After conversion, the original account becomes a Page only. You manage the Page through a separate personal account.

What happens to my personal posts and photos?

They do not transfer to the Page. Your personal posts and photos remain in your downloaded data archive (if you downloaded it before converting) but are not visible on the new Page’s timeline.

How long does the conversion take?

The actual conversion process typically completes within a few minutes after you click Convert. However, preparing for the conversion — downloading your data, informing your audience, and planning your Page setup — may take longer.

Can I convert my profile to a Page on mobile?

Yes. The conversion can be initiated through the Facebook app on both Android and iPhone, though some users find the desktop version of the migration tool easier to navigate.

Will my Page URL be the same as my profile URL?

If your profile had a custom @username, it will transfer to your Page URL. If not, Facebook will assign a default URL which you can customise in your Page settings after conversion.

Can I convert any type of Facebook profile?

The conversion tool is available for standard personal profiles. If your account has been restricted, flagged, or is already associated with existing Pages, the tool may not be available. Contact Facebook Support if you encounter issues accessing the migration tool.

Is there a friend minimum or maximum required to convert?

No. You can convert a profile with any number of friends. All friends, regardless of count, become Page followers after conversion.

What should I do if the conversion fails?

Try again from a desktop browser using the direct URL facebook.com/pages/create/migrate. If the error persists, clear your browser cache, try a different browser, or contact Facebook Support through the Help Center at facebook.com/help.
