Samsung R220 (2001) — A Classic Basic Phone from the Early Mobile Era

The Samsung R220 was announced back in 2001, during the early days of mobile phones when handsets were built for one purpose — making calls and sending texts. It is now discontinued, but it remains an interesting piece of mobile phone history for collectors and nostalgia enthusiasts alike.

The phone is compact, measuring just 110 x 46 x 23.5mm and weighing only 99 grams, making it lightweight and pocket-friendly by any standard. It connects to GSM 900/1800 networks and uses a Mini-SIM card.

The R220 features a monochrome graphic display with a resolution of 128 x 64 pixels in an 18:9 ratio, complete with blue back-lighting, analog and digital clock options, and a dynamic font size. As expected for a phone of its era, it has no rear or front-facing camera.

For storage, the R220 can hold up to 100 phonebook contacts along with logs for 10 dialed, 10 received, and 10 missed calls, plus message templates. It runs on a removable Li-Ion battery offering up to 150 hours of standby time and around 5 hours of talk time.

In terms of sound, the phone supports vibration alerts and downloadable monophonic ringtones with a built-in composer, though it lacks a loudspeaker and 3.5mm headphone jack. Connectivity options are minimal by today’s standards, with no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, or USB support. The Samsung R220 was available in three colors — Navy Blue, Green, and Dark Gray.
