Huawei has officially revived its SE-branded Nova lineup after skipping new SE variants following the Nova 12 SE, ending months of speculation about whether the sub-brand would return. Alongside the launch of the MateBook Pro S ultralight laptop, Huawei also unveiled the Nova 16 SE today, marking the comeback of the SE series with a genuinely feature-packed mid-range device.
Huawei Nova 16 SE Specifications
The Huawei Nova 16 SE features a 6.84-inch flat OLED display with a 2756 x 1272 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. What really stands out, however, is the display’s brightness capability, with Huawei rating the panel at up to 8,000 nits of local peak brightness, a genuinely exceptional figure that goes well beyond what’s typically found even on premium flagship displays. The panel also includes 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, a feature aimed at reducing eye strain and screen flicker, particularly beneficial for users sensitive to lower-frequency PWM dimming found on many other OLED panels.

Under the hood, the Nova 16 SE is powered by Huawei’s own Kirin 8020 chipset, paired with storage options going up to 512GB, giving buyers a range of choices depending on their storage needs.
Camera System
For photography, the Nova 16 SE includes a 32-megapixel front-facing camera along with a dual rear camera setup. The main camera uses a 50-megapixel RYYB sensor, measuring 1/1.56 inches, paired with optical image stabilization (OIS) for improved shot stability. The RYYB sensor design, which replaces one of the green subpixels found in traditional RGGB sensors with a red subpixel, is generally used to improve light capture in low-light conditions.
Alongside the main camera, the device includes Huawei’s Red Maple color camera, a secondary sensor specifically designed to improve overall color reproduction and accuracy across captured images.

The Huawei Nova 16 SE ships with HarmonyOS 6.1 out of the box, keeping it current with Huawei’s latest software platform. Battery life is a clear highlight here, with the device packing a substantial 8,500mAh battery, supporting 66W wired fast charging, an impressively large capacity that should comfortably deliver multi-day battery life for most users depending on usage patterns.

The Nova 16 SE includes a range of additional hardware features, including a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for quick unlocking, dual super-linear 1115 speakers for improved audio output, and a build combining an aluminum alloy frame with a fiberglass back panel.
Connectivity-wise, the device includes an IR blaster for controlling compatible home appliances, NFC support, Wi-Fi 7, Huawei’s Star Flash 2.0 technology, and Bluetooth 6.0. Perhaps most notably, the Nova 16 SE includes Beidou satellite messaging support, allowing users to send basic messages even in areas without traditional cellular coverage, a feature not commonly found at this price point and typically reserved for premium flagship devices.

On durability, the Huawei Nova 16 SE carries an impressive combination of IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings, covering protection against dust, water immersion, and high-pressure, high-temperature water jets, a genuinely comprehensive durability certification rarely seen together on a single device, let alone one positioned as a mid-range option.
