With Google’s Made by Google event just weeks away, attention has already started shifting toward what comes after the Pixel 11 series. A new leak has surfaced pointing to internal codenames for next year’s Pixel A-series device, suggesting Google has already begun early development work on the Pixel 11a.
Codenames Found in a Beta Version of Google’s Phone App
According to a report from Android Authority, internal codenames for the entire Pixel 11 lineup were discovered within a beta build of the Phone by Google app, specifically version 230.0.946661649-publicbeta-pixel. The codenames uncovered were Cubs, Grizzly, Kodiak, Yogi, and Formosan.
Based on the report, Cubs, Grizzly, Kodiak, and Yogi are believed to correspond to the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, respectively, while the Formosan codename is associated specifically with the upcoming Pixel 11a.
The fact that a codename for the Pixel 11a has already surfaced, well before the Pixel 11 series itself has even launched, suggests Google’s development timeline for the A-series successor is already underway internally. It’s also worth noting that Google appears to be continuing a bear-themed naming convention across the entire Pixel 11 family, a pattern the company has used in previous generations as well.
Google hasn’t officially confirmed the Pixel 11a’s existence, and it’s worth remembering that internal codenames can and sometimes do change before a device’s official announcement, so this detail should be treated as an early signal rather than confirmed information.
What to Expect at the Made by Google Event
Google’s Made by Google event is scheduled for August 12, where the company is widely expected to officially unveil the Pixel 11 series alongside other hardware, including a new Pixel Watch 5 and the next generation of Pixel Buds earphones.
What Could Improve With the Pixel 11a
Assuming the Pixel 11a does eventually launch, it’s expected to build on the current Pixel 10a, which debuted in India back in March at a starting price of Rs. 49,999. The Pixel 10a features a 6.3-inch display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i, and runs on Google’s own Tensor G4 chipset paired with the Titan M2 security coprocessor for enhanced device security.
On the camera front, the Pixel 10a includes a dual rear camera system led by a 48-megapixel primary sensor, along with a 13-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls. Battery life is handled by a 5,100mAh cell, supporting 30W wired charging and 10W wireless charging.
Given Google’s usual pattern with its A-series phones, the Pixel 11a will likely aim to bring modest but meaningful upgrades over the 10a, potentially including a newer Tensor chip generation and possible camera or battery improvements, though concrete details will need to wait until closer to its eventual announcement, likely sometime next year based on Google’s typical A-series release cadence.
