With Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z foldable lineup now officially launched, attention is beginning to shift toward the company’s next flagship series, the Galaxy S27. According to a new report, the upcoming lineup could bring a notable shift in camera hardware, with Samsung reportedly testing a new Sony sensor for the primary camera on both the standard Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+.

A Potential Break From ISOCELL Sensors

According to Dutch publication Galaxy Club, Samsung is currently testing versions of the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ equipped with a 50-megapixel Sony sensor for their primary rear camera. If this report holds true, it would mark the first time in over a decade that Samsung has used a non-ISOCELL sensor for the main camera on a Galaxy S-series flagship.

For context, Samsung’s own ISOCELL sensor technology has been a staple of its flagship camera systems since the Galaxy S5, which launched back in 2015 as the company’s first smartphone to feature a 16-megapixel ISOCELL camera. Every Galaxy S-series model since then has continued using ISOCELL sensors for its primary camera, making this potential shift to a Sony sensor a fairly significant departure from over ten years of established camera hardware strategy.

Still Early in Development

It’s worth noting that development of the Galaxy S27 series is reportedly still in a relatively early stage, meaning Samsung could still make changes to the camera hardware before mass production begins. The exact sensor model and its detailed specifications for the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ also remain unknown at this point, so specifics like sensor size, aperture, and additional imaging features haven’t been confirmed.

Camera Details Across the Lineup

According to earlier reports, both the Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ are also being tested with 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle cameras. Meanwhile, separate leaks have suggested that Samsung’s more premium models, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra, could instead feature upgraded 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle cameras, a notable step up in resolution reserved specifically for the higher-tier devices in the lineup.

Additionally, the Galaxy S27 series has been tipped to include an under-display selfie camera, a feature that would allow for a completely uninterrupted front display without a visible camera cutout or punch-hole.

A Four-Model Lineup Strategy

Perhaps just as notable as the camera changes is Samsung’s rumored shift in lineup structure. The Galaxy S27 series is reportedly set to include four flagship models, a departure from the three-model strategy Samsung has followed consistently since the Galaxy S20 series debuted back in 2020.

Based on current rumors, the expanded lineup is expected to include the Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27+, Galaxy S27 Pro, and Galaxy S27 Ultra, effectively adding a new “Pro” tier positioned between the Plus and Ultra models, a structure that would give Samsung more granular pricing and feature differentiation across its flagship range.

Expected Launch Timeline

Samsung is expected to unveil its next-generation Galaxy S-series sometime in early 2027, consistent with the company’s typical release pattern for its flagship S-series lineup. That said, an official launch timeline hasn’t been communicated by Samsung yet, so this window remains an estimate based on the company’s historical release cadence.

What This Could Mean for Galaxy S27 Buyers

If Samsung does move forward with a Sony sensor for the Galaxy S27 and S27+’s main camera, it could signal a broader strategic shift in how the company approaches camera hardware sourcing going forward, potentially opening the door to further changes in future generations as well. Combined with the rumored expansion to a four-model lineup and an under-display selfie camera, the Galaxy S27 series looks set to bring some of the more significant structural changes to Samsung’s flagship strategy in recent years, assuming these early reports hold up as development continues.
