Samsung’s next flagship is getting attention for two reasons. One is a reported thermal problem in early test units. The other is a new set of case leaks that show how the Galaxy S27 lineup may look.
Reports Claim the Chip Is Overheating
According to tipster Saurav on X, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Extreme Edition, expected to power the Galaxy S27 Ultra, is reportedly overheating and throttling in early test units. Thermal throttling happens when a chip slows itself down to manage heat. It can cause performance drops during long gaming sessions, video recording, or heavy multitasking, even when benchmark scores look strong.
Neither Samsung nor Qualcomm has verified a thermal problem. Early test units also often run hotter than final retail devices, because cooling and software tuning continue to be refined before mass production.
Qualcomm has reportedly called the claims “100% inaccurate.” According to the tipster, though, its response specifically referred to the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chip. That leaves open whether the denial also covers the Extreme Edition variant linked to the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Until Qualcomm or Samsung gives a clearer answer, the situation is unresolved.
Samsung’s challenge is to deliver flagship-level peak performance without giving up sustained speed or thermal control.
Separately, leaker Ice Universe has shared photos of protective cases for the Galaxy S27 series. They appear to show four models: the Galaxy S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. According to coverage of the leak, the cases suggest a split in design:
Galaxy S27 and S27+: These keep a vertical camera layout with separate cutouts, similar to the Galaxy S26 and S26+.
Galaxy S27 Pro and S27 Ultra: These appear to use a wide, horizontal camera island across the upper part of the back, a clear break from the vertical layout Samsung has used for years.

Later case photos reportedly showed the Ultra’s camera openings in more detail, though the exact layout is still debated. Other leakers have shared conflicting information about how the components are arranged inside the camera area. Cases made by third parties come from supply-chain molds and don’t confirm Samsung’s final design.
One report also suggests the Galaxy S27 Pro could use a less capable telephoto setup than the Ultra, which would fit Samsung’s effort to separate the two models more clearly.
Taken together, the leaks describe a lineup in transition. Samsung appears to be adding a Pro model and giving the top two phones a new look. It may also be working through the heat challenges that come with a very powerful chip. A larger camera island could free up internal space, but whether it improves cooling or camera hardware hasn’t been confirmed.
The series is still months from its expected launch, and Samsung hasn’t announced any of these details. Treat the overheating claims and the case-based design leaks as unconfirmed until Samsung says otherwise.
